Post-pandemic challenges in the manufacturing and engineering industry

We spoke to Lee Raybould, RMT’s Managing Director about the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the current challenges in industry.

“Covid has brought many difficult trading conditions in various areas for our business. We had numerous customers closed for many months with our suppliers also in lock down for long periods of time. Even post-pandemic, the availability of spares and components is still proving difficult. Together with other business hurdles that we now have to deal with surrounding Brexit, we have many more lost hours in complying with barriers that were not there before.”

“Whilst the UK economy is going through these difficult conditions, I foresee that a number of UK companies could close due to factors beyond their control i.e. utilities costs rising, additional day-to-day running costs, logistics, labour rates, and skill shortages.”

“However, I do have a positive outlook based on our current level of enquiries and the optimism felt by our customers for new business that will hopefully be coming online in the next 12 months. Another factor which is pleasing is we are speaking with so many different business sectors which is encouraging, whereas for so long our business was reliant upon the automotive industry.”

In conclusion, whilst businesses are experiencing the effects of the current climate, Lee shares a positive outlook which we hope can inspire many other businesses in the sector. We need to encourage more businesses to share their positive news amongst the sector, so feel free to share this story on your social platforms.
